I'm the one on the left.Echo by Francesca Lia Block
The book Echo by Francesca Lia Block is a very captivating coming of age story. It is about a girl named Echo who is trying to find her path in life. As she gets into her teenage years, she begins reflecting on her childhood and sees that everything isn’t as perfect as it should be. She has a neglective artist for a father that is so absorbed with her mother that he barely leaves time to show attention to his daughter. Her mother is an “angel” who does everything perfectly. She cooks, gardens, sings, dances, is extremely beautiful, and also overlooks her daughter because of how engrossed she is with her husband.
When Echo’s father is diagnosed with cancer, Echo has to go out on her own to find out who she is. She meets many people on her journey from her first love, the blueberry scented boy on the beach, the magician and poet, Thorn, to the aspiring musician, Smoke, and Eden, the little girl so full of life, you’ll be taken back to your childhood as you read about her. She learns valuable lessons about love, life, and how much her parents truly adore her in this enchanting novel that takes you to a wonderful place you’d never know existed until you read it.
The book is a narrative that people of all ages can relate to. It shows different points of view that thoroughly demonstrate the hardships of the current teenager. It allows you to see what hides beneath the surface of every person and take life for what it’s worth. It will also compel you to read other novels by the astounding writer, Francesca Lia Block. I give it a complete 5 stomps.
