This story takes place at McClenton Middle School during modern times. The main character is a young girl named Maleeka Madison. She has low self-esteem because she is tall, skinny, and dark-skinned. Maleeka is also very poor. People constantly tease her, especially since she's so dark. Maleeka has no real friends, but she does hang around three troublemakers (Char, Raise, and Raina). Char is the ringleader of the group and she loves to use Maleeka and boss her around.
Miss Saunders is a new teacher at McClenton Middle School. Maleeka is her favorite student, but Maleeka can not seem to find any good in her. In fact, none of the students like her. Miss Saunders is very tough on the students. She's really hard on Char because Char is disrespectful and doesn't car about school. Char thinks Miss Saunders is picking on her and decides to seek revenge. Maleeka, Raise, and Raina are all dragged into Char's plan. Even though Maleeka knows it is wrong, she plays a part in the revenge anyway. What is the outcome? Read the book to find out!
The Skin I'm In tells the story of a young girl and her struggles. Maleeka's low self-esteem made her hang around the wrong crowd. Even though she was treated badly by her "friends", Maleeka had a sense of security and acceptance when she was around them. She ended up falling under peer pressure and making a life-changing decision. Flake's story is great for adolescent girls because it deals with the many problems they experience. Peer pressure and self-image are difficult issues that adolescent go through, so all girls can relate to Maleeka's story. If you're having social or self-esteem problems, The Skin I'm In will inspire you to be confident and have self-love. This is a great book!!!

This book is about a young girl named Maleeka who is teased because of her skin color. She is bullied by a girl named Charlese so charlese can bring her clothes to wear to school because she is poor. She doesn't like Miss Saunders but little do she know is that Miss Saunders sees much more in than her skin color.
I like the book because it relates to alot of young people in school beacause kids are teased all the time in school and it's good to read something that I can relate to.
Book Blogs are an awesome for students to respond to a text. This book is perfect for my students becasue it shows how the pressure to fit in can lead to bod decisions.
