When I think of a mixture of excitement, adrenaline, and good times the first thing that comes to mind is being at an Alabama football game, cheering on the Tide. In the novel "Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer" the author Warren St. John gives the reader an idea of just what it's like to live, breathe, and sleep Alabama football.
St. John decided that he would write a book about the obsession people have for their sports teams, and being from Alabama, he knew that there were no more dedicated fans than the ones that followed the Crimson Tide. To help capture the adoration of the fans, he wanted to interview some people that have the large motor homes and drive them from game to game.
Early in the season, he realized to really be a part of the RV nation, he would need to purchase one himself and that experience helped him to be able to recreate such a detailed experience of the 1999 football season.
Even though the RV he bought was a used one, and he gave it the nickname "The Hawg", he put a lot of time and money into it and followed the Tide to every game that season. Whether it was Bryant Denny stadium for the opening game of the season or down in "The Swamp" to see the final extra point attempt sail through the uprights to seal Bama's victory over Florida, he saw it all. Reading the book brought back to me a lot of memories of that year when Bama won the SEC championship title.
Throughout the book St. John really created a clear picture of what its like to be right there in the heart of University Boulevard on a Saturday afternoon during football season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and on other college campuses throughout the South. Because of the detail, excitement, and the fact that I love the Crimson Tide I give this book 5 out of 5 stomps.
Roll Tide!
