The Beekeeper's Apprentice~Reviewed by: Jessica Elam

If you like Sherlock Holmes stories then you will love this book. The Beekeeper's Apprentice is about a teenage girl, Mary Russel, who happens upon the world's greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes, while strolling upon a hill in Sussex. After literally falling into his lap, they begin a unique friendship based on the love of knowledge and detective work. As Sherlock's apprentice, Mary learns a lot about the strange world of the eccentric detective. As their friendship grows, Holmes allows her to take part in what little detective work he still takes on.
Usually his cases are simply, as he would put it, "elementary". Even when Mary is accepted into Oxford and engrossed in homework, she still participates in Sherlock's cases. Then a bomb goes off at the detectives country estate and Mary finds her self part of a case instead of the one solving it. She and Sherlock must make a run for their lives while trying to solve the case. Will this case end both Sherlock's life and new found friendship or will he come out the victor as always?
I think that this book shows that friendship can be a very powerful thing. Mary saved Sherlock from withering away like a has been while Sherlock showed Mary that she can do anything no matter her sex. It also shows that a women can be just as intellectual as the world's greatest detective, and just as witty. If anything, this book has literally raised Sherlock Holmes from the dead and made his stories even more interesting for the older generation and legible for the younger generation.
