Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

This book is a great read. The characters are all real people, though some names have been changed, and their lives, according to this book, are really crazy. John Berendt, the author and narrator of the book, is entranced by Savannah, a peaceful and secluded city in Georgia. He rents an apartment in carriage house and travels between New York and Savannah. He soon begins to live in Savannah full time and becomes acquainted with some of the city's more infamous characters. These include Jim Williams, an entrepreneur and owner of the Mercer House, Joe Odom, a "lawyer" and glorified squatter, Chablis, a drag queen with a really interesting vocabulary, and Minerva, a voodoo priestess who will curse anyone for $25, just to name a few.

The book basically follows the lives of these citizens as they go through their everyday lives. Some of them lead some very interesting lives. Jim Williams, for example, is convicted for the murder of his employee and lover, Danny Hansford, three times. Apparently, the prosecution can't get it's case together. Williams even enlists the help of Minerva to curse the D.A. and turn the jury in his favor. Of course, Williams story is just one of the many in this book.

I think that this book shows that even the most tranquil places have their dark sides. Savannah is a prime example of of this and it shows that everyone, even the rich and supposedly innocent, live strange personal lives. Over all, I really like this book, it is a great read and I'd suggest it to anyone who likes the south, humor, and weird murder mysteries.
