Brian is a fifteen year old boy whose parents have divorsed and he is getting ready to go visit his dad in the summer Canadian wilderness. Before he gets on the little bush plan to cross the deep woods and lakes his mother gives him a hatchet as a gift. During his plane ride his pilot has a massive heart attack and dies and leaves Bryan to fend for himself. Luckily the plane crashes into a lake which provided a softer landing. He grabbed as much of the supplies that he could before it sank and swam to shore. He passes out and when he wakes up its dusk and the mosquitos are all over him. He knows that he needs to find shelter and get fire going if he wants a chance to survive so he searches until he finds a cave next to the water that he thinks will work. He eventually gets a fire going which runs the mosquitos off because of the smoke but he's still in alot of trouble if he doesn't find food soon. Will he survive the wilderness or will someone ever find him?
I love nature, outdoor books so I gave this book five stomps. Gary Paulson is one of my favorite authors and he can relate to the characters in his stories because he puts himslf in their positions in order to write realistically. The book was never boring to me and always kept me on my toes even though I had read the book seven years earlier. It never gets old.
