Before my English class and I read this book I was kind of afraid i was going to be bored out of my mind. Seeing since it is an older book and was rather slow i do believe in the beginning, but as i read on i found it to be and outstanding book. One i would recommend to any kid or adult.
Now this novel is another coming of age story about a spunky girl named Scout and her older brother Jem. They live in Maycomb Alabama in the 1930's. We follow them as they grow to understand that the world isn't as fair and that people aren't always treated equally.
The summer when Scout was six and Jem was ten, they met Dill, a little boy who spent the summer with his aunt who lived next door to the Finches. Dill and Jem become obsessed with Boo Radley, the neighborhood "Phantom". He never comes outside except at night. Rumors went on about Boo saying he ate cats and stared at people through their windows while they sleep. Dill loved the idea of Boo so him and Jem began coming up with ideas on how to get him to come out of his house, but sadly none of them were successful.
Boo Radley who's name is really Arthur Radley, begins leaving Jem and Scout his little treasures in an old tree hole. Scout and Jem just thought that it was someones hiding spot and that they were taking something from someone else, but when they found the two carved soap dolls that looked just like them they began to wonder. Boo's father Mr. Radley cements the hole up one day canceling Boo's contact with the outside world. Jem and Scout become even more curious.
Atticus, Jem and Scouts father, is a very respected and upstanding lawyer in small Maycomb County. He defends Tom Robinson in the trial. Tom was accused of raping Ms. Mayella Ewell one day after she called him over to help her out with her house. Tom was completely innocent and had proof of it being so, but lost due to the fact that he was black. That is one example of how people were most certainly not treated equally.
Now, i don't want to give away the book or the ending, which totally rocks, so go read the book yourself!! Almost all English teachers have it, and every book store carries it. Its a real classic.
I give this book four out of five stomps!!!
